At 34, Gabriel Attal is France’s youngest-ever prime minister He is appointed the new Prime Minister after Élisabeth Borne stepped down from the position.
With growing support for far-right movements in France, Macron is said to be changing his government’s policies accordingly. As a part of that, he made a major change in his cabinet and appointed Gabriel Attal, as the new Prime Minister who is said to have introduced right-wing policies in the education sector. Gabriel Attal, who is already serving as the government’s spokesperson, is also the first Prime Minister of France to openly declare himself a homosexual.
It is worth recalling that Emmanuel Macron became the youngest president of the country when he took over as the president of France in 2017. He is now 46 years old. Support for anti-immigration and anti-Islam policies is increasing among people.
Although Emanuel Macron won the presidential election held in 2022, his centrist party lost its majority in the parliamentary election held that year and formed the country’s first minority government. After this, Emanuel Macron is also adjusting the course of his rule according to the current political environment. Accordingly, Parliament recently passed a law to increase the government’s power to deport foreigners settling in France.
Elisabeth Borne resignation followed Gabriel’s appointment
Then-Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne criticized the law as unconstitutional. In this context, Emmanuel Macron made a major reshuffle of his cabinet to facilitate the implementation of more right-wing policies for the remainder of his term in office. As part of that, moderate Élisabeth Borne stepped down on Monday at Macron’s request. Gabriel Attal has now been appointed in his place.
Initially a member of the center-left Socialist Party and then the ruling Renaissance Party, which had moderate and liberal policies, Gabriel Attal is said to have implemented extreme right-wing policies after taking over as education minister. His ban on long robes to prevent Muslim girls from wearing headscarves in classes caused a stir. Gabriel Attal said the order was issued to ensure ‘secularism’ in schools.
Gabriel Attal as a new PM:
In this context, appointing him as the new Prime Minister is seen as Emmanuel Macron’s strategy to know the
mood of the voters and make the party win in the next election. Gabriel Attal is already well known among the people as he is the young spokesperson of the ruling party.
Opinion polls say that he has the most popular influence in Macron’s cabinet. Therefore, it is considered that he has a chance to compete on behalf of the Renaissance party in the next presidential election to be held in 2027.
