A new law will be introduced in South Korea to ban the sale of dogs for meat by 2027. The bill was passed in the South Korean parliament yesterday.
South Korea has been eating dog meat for centuries . The South Korean government has been consulting for a long time to put an end to this. At the same time, the country’s animal welfare activists are also demanding a ban on eating dog meat. Accordingly, a bill was passed yesterday in the South Korean parliament that would make it illegal to slaughter and sell dogs for meat. The bill was passed in Parliament by a margin of 208-0.
What does the new law says?
Breeding, killing or selling of dogs for meat will be banned under the new law . Violation of this law is illegal. Those who kill dogs for food face up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million Korean won (about $23,000). The bill will come into effect in three years (2027) and become law.
The government has also promised to help butcher shop owners to start another business within 3 years and generate income. About 1,100 dog farms operate for food purposes in South Korea. And about a million dogs are reared on these farms, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
Citizens’ rebel agaist the Bill:
This bill is currently causing controversy. The young generation on one side and the older generation on the other side are showing their opposition and support. some citizens in south korea, said, “More and more people have pets today. Dogs have become like one of our family members. It will not be good to eat it,” they said. But senior citizens are fighting against the dog meat ban. The bill now goes to President Yoon Suk Yeol for final approval. It is to be noted that once the approval is obtained it will become a law.
