US-based technology giant Google has announced that it is laying off hundreds of employees as part of a cost-cutting measure.
Last year, Google and its parent company Alphabet said they would gradually cut 12,000 jobs as part of a cost-cutting drive. This is 6 percent of the total workforce of the company.
Now, Google has announced that it is going to lay off some more departments.
In this regard, the statement issued by Google said:
The company seeks to increase investment in key sectors and create new opportunities. For this, some committees have been formed to make changes in the management systems of the company. In order to cut costs, it was reported that hundreds of employees working in the hardware, voice assistant division and Pixel handset division are being laid off.
In a post published by the Alphabet Employees’ Union on the X website, ‘Once again the employees have been fired unnecessarily. Our staff and team members are working hard to provide the best service to our customers. It is reprehensible that a company that makes billions every quarter should lay off employees. Our struggle will not rest until we guarantee the works,’ he said.
Last week Amazon laid off hundreds of employees working on its Prime Video. More than 500 employees will be laid off, the company said.
Last year Meta laid off more than 20,000 employees. It is noteworthy that there is a fierce competition between Google and Microsoft in the field of artificial intelligence.
With this move by Google, the beginning of 2024 has started impressively for those working in the IT sector. There are fears that many more companies will follow Google and take similar steps.
