A tunnel collapse in Uttarkashi on Nov 21 trapped 41 workers underground.
Update from 18th November to 20th November 2023: Several attempts were made to cut down a rock wall over the past week but all of them were unsuccessful. However, on Friday, a drilling machine was used to cut through the rock. A six-foot pipe was installed in the hole to supply food, water, and medicine. Previously, the workers were only provided with dry fruits but now the agencies can provide them with proper meals.
Update on 21st November 2023: In the recent update, the Centre has created a five-step plan to rescue the trapped workers. Additionally, five different agencies have been assigned to execute the operation. The International Tunneling and Underground Space Association president is looking after the rescue operation. The robotics team from the Defense Research Organization (DRDO) has reached the spot. The team is expected to explore the status of debris by inserting micro drones and other high-tech robots through a cavity on the top of the tunnel.
Also, the International Tunnelling expert Arnold Dix expressed optimism about the operation while speaking to the media .
“It’s fantastic, of course, the news we have had over the last few hours. It is great to see the faces of those men that we are going to bring home. We have food going to them now, we have communications to them now. You have seen this morning that we have multiple approaches to the rescue. It’s a good morning.”
