On Wednesday, the Ministry revealed that it had taken action against 100 websites that are involved in scams related to job and investment offers. These websites were also found to be engaged in illegal activities overseas. As a result, the government has blocked these websites to prevent further harm to innocent individuals.
The I4C (Indian Cybercrime Coordination Center), a part of the Home Ministry, aims to put extensive effort into cutting down the cybercrime in India.
Detection of Scam website:
The (NCTA) National Cybercrime Threat Analytics Unit, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, recognized and recommended MeitY (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology) to block the websites.
The websites in question were found to be engaging in fraudulent activities, including offering fake investment opportunities and job offers. As a result, they were blocked under the Information Technology Act of 2000, which prohibits such illegal activities in the online space.
According to the officials, these websites are operated by individuals living out of India. They use digital advertisements, messenger, and fake accounts to do such activities. Moreover, economic crimes like card networks, overseas ATM withdrawals, and cryptocurrency were conducted outside India.
“It was also learnt that proceeds from the large-scale economic frauds were seen to be laundered out of India using card network, cryptocurrency, overseas ATM withdrawals and international fintech companies”, the MHA said.
The National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) has received a handful number of complaints regarding such kind of fraudulent activities. These scams involve various forms of online deception, and the NCRP is actively working to investigate and prevent such criminal activities.
Fraudulent individuals are using platforms such as Meta and Google to advertise in multiple languages and trap individuals looking after job seekers. In addition, messaging apps like WhatsApp and Telegram are used to lure people into investing money with the promise of doubling their returns. These tactics are used to scam people.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has stated that such type of activities create a threat to citizens’ data security, which the govt is working on.
“These offences were posing significant threats to the citizens and also involved data security concerns”, said the ministry.
However, in the last month, MeitY blocked 22 illegal websites and apps for betting, concerning the poll in Chhattisgarh.
