December 5, 2023/ 9:45 AM IST: The COP-28 has been successful since the first day. More than 120 countries have participated in this high-level meeting. Several important steps, discussions and green signals were given for initiatives like climate, renewable energy, green credits, health, oil and petroleum till day three of COP-28.
On the fourth day of COP-28, the conference was abuzz with a flurry of activities. Delegates from different countries engaged in intense discussions, negotiations, and presentations. The plenary sessions were filled with passionate speeches, and the breakout sessions were packed with experts sharing their knowledge and experiences. The atmosphere was electric, and everyone was eager to contribute to the global effort to combat climate change. However, several events happened in the meeting and here’s to know.
-
The Finance Day:
Every year on December 4, Finance Day is celebrated as COP. During this event, the countries forwarded their support for the Adaptation Fund and announced 300 million dollars for mobilization. In addition, pledges and contributions towards the Adaption Fund will help in doubling the amount to 500 million dollars for future projects.
-
Gender Day at COP-28:
Another important event after Finance Day is Gender Day at COP028. Women, who are suffering from poverty struggle the most as they get limited access towards making decisions. Apart from the challenges, women are showing concern towards climate change in their knowledge and expertise. For this, COP-28’s Gender’s Day is concentrating on the policies regarding women’s role in resiling communities and climatic actions.
-
Focusing on Nature, Lives and Livelihood:
COP-28 understands the need for a Loss and Damage fund, especially for the developing countries that are affected due to climate change. This will interconnect the climate action with humans as well as the environment.
-
Global Stake:
In COP-28, the Global Stocktake is an appropriate and progressive step towards the Paris Agreement. As, it reveals that the world is not on track for global warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius, as it’s above that. Fierce action needs to be taken to minimize the use of carbon and transform and invest in climate finance.
-
Focusing on Health:
The health of human beings can be affected by the climatic surroundings. Poor air quality, mental health, and zoonotic and vector-borne diseases (VBD) are some major diseases that can cause harm to humans.
Climate change is already affecting society globally. The COP-28 should start strengthening the Adaption and Resilience measures. Implementing sustainable practices, building grid infrastructure, and disaster management are some important steps to save the planet from extreme disasters, climatic change, rise in sea levels and disturbance in the ecosystem. Moreover, the above events that happened at COP-28 indicate that COP-28 is not only focusing on climate but is also taking care of health, peace, finance, livelihood and the environment.
