December 3, 2023/ 2:09 PM IST: On the second day of the COP-28 conference, 118 countries agreed on tripling renewable energy by the year 2030. Whereas, India was not present in the session creating questions in everyone’s mind. Now following India, China was also not present to take the pledge.
As India and China are the first and the second-largest countries to have the biggest renewable capacity they are not invited to take pledge. The U.S.A and Brazil, the second and third largest countries to hold the capacity of renewable sources were invited.
About Tripling the ‘Renewable energy’:
In the past years, the world has seen an increase in energy sources like wind energy and solar energy. However, the cost and workforce remain a questionable factor in this area. Several projects got cancelled just for this.
Now, at COP-28, around 118 countries agreed to install 10,000 GW (Gigawatt) of renewable energy and to increase the financial investments for this sector, by 2030. Also, to increase the world’s nuclear power and lower the use of Methane.
Now by increasing renewable energy, it will help to cut down the use of greenhouse gas, increase economic growth, purify the air quality and provide jobs and employment.
Key strategies to triple the ‘Renewable energy’:
-
Financing:
Now, this is crucial because, without capital or financial support, the projects won’t be able to start or continue properly. So, for this, a path must be paved for investment.
-
Encouraging an increase in renewable energy:
By increasing the use of renewable energy, it will create a roadmap for investment. And will help to modify the grid infrastructure to keep the growth of the share to continue.
-
Include the Innovation:
If the technology is included then it will be easier to set up solar panels, wind turbines and other advanced technologies within budget.
The Senior Associate of India Energy Transition Lead (E3G), Madhura Joshi stated on getting the daunting news of India’s absence in the Global Renewable Pledge taking Ceremony at COP-28. As the discussion was already done in the G20 Presidency, Delhi.
However, early this year, the Power Minister revealed that India has already installed 170GW capacity and will triple it to 500 GW, as it is considered the renewable energy source for India.
“The good news is that India has already ambitious targets of renewable 450GW by 2030, and a thriving energy efficiency program spanning sectors. The hope is that India will champion tripling renewable and doubling energy efficiency by 2030 at COP-28 in the text. India is a global renewable leader and its support will provide a boost for the global renewables sector”, Madhura Joshi added later.
Moreover, she previously retweeted “X” on the ICC (India Climate Collaborative) post regarding attending COP28.
“Folks at COP-28 do attend the event. It’s a stellar panel and will have some stimulating discussions”, she said in her post.
The director-general of International Solar Alliance, Ajay Mathur said that India’s pledge on renewable energy will help in the development of climate change.
Furthermore, India is trying to make an informed call to the officials to get more information. Whereas, experts assume that the vigorous use of coal might be the reason for India’s absence in the Renewable Energy pledge-taking ceremony at COP-28. Above all India is looking forward to developing renewable energy, by investing more research and finance to generate renewable energy.
However, India is expected to make its presence in other important meetings at COP-28, as green credit and triple the renewable energy pledge have been already missed.
