On Tuesday, the trailer for Regina King’s upcoming biographical drama Shirley, which is named after her, was released on Netflix.
The movie tells the story of how Chisholm became the first Black candidate to run for president in the United States and the first woman to contest for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination.
Shirley Chisholm’s Biopic
The two-minute teaser opens with Regina King’s Chisholm declaring her intention to run for president and saying she’s going to make it easier for individuals who look like her to be elected. Will you be the next president? At a street fair, a young child approaches her and declares, “You ain’t no man.” “Perhaps we ought to locate your mother,” she answers.
The trailer ends with her saying, “The people of America are watching us”. Lance Reddick, Lucas Hedges, Terrence Howard, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Christina Jackson, Michael Cherrie, Dorian Crossmond Missick, Amirah Vann, W. Earl Brown, Brad James, Reina King, and André Holland are among the cast members who front the group with Regina King.
On March 22, the biopic will be available on Netflix.
Producing the movie are Elizabeth Haggard, Anikah McLaren, Regina and Reina King, and Ridley. Executive producers Ted Gidlow and Jeff Skoll are connected.
Filming
December 2021 saw the start of filming in Cincinnati, with intentions to continue in Los Angeles and New York. Reshoots were place in April 2023, contrary to original reports that production would end in April 2022.
Date of Release
The release date was rescheduled from 2023 to 2024. The 116-minute picture, which has a PG-13 rating, will be released worldwide on March 22, 2024.
