Director Jio Baby, who gained attention with the film ‘The Great Indian Kitchen’, next directed the film ‘kaathal the core’
‘Kaathal The Core’ starring actor Mammootty and actress Jyotika. Produced by Mammootty Company, the film has released in theaters today.
Mathews (Mammooty), a retired civil servant lives with his wife Omana (Jyotika) and daughter. One day, while returning from church, he applied to contest in the panchayat council elections.
But in the next few days, his wife goes to court seeking divorce against him. As a result of the divorce, Matthews mentions that he has had a homosexual relationship with Thangan for several years. Knowing this, the townspeople make fun of Mathews and Tangan in various ways.
As a heterosexual husband, Matthews laments his love for his wife but his inability to understand her physical needs. Subsequently, he informs his Left wing supporters that he does not want to contest the election due to concerns about social disrespect for him due to his gender identity. Explaining that gender selection is their personal matter, the party executive convinces Mathews to contest by saying that we are with you and that we can field a transgender candidate and bring about a new change.
On the other hand, the trial takes place in court. There, Omana, who has been living with her husband for 20 years of marriage, says that she has lived all these years in the hope that someday these things will change even though there are some crises such as not having the physical needs that a woman normally gets, and being connected to a man who cannot understand her feelings.
However, Mathews is reluctant to talk about his relationship with Tangan, arguing with his lawyer, as Mathews wants to live with Omana. As the case draws to a close, the father testifies to the judge against Matthews that there is no evidence that the two of them had a relationship, and that my son is heterosexual. Has Mathews, who is heartbroken by this, recovered from these emotional crises? What happened to the divorce case? Did the public vote for Bin Mathews, who was identified as a heterosexual attraction? Director Jio Baby has created Kaathal The Core by posing these questions.
In his debut film ‘The Great Indian Kitchen‘, Jio Baby spoke about how important self-esteem is for a woman, and in this film, Jio Baby vividly portrays that love is about understanding the feelings of those around us. He has directed the film as a conversation in his elegant thinking without blaming the society’s backwardness and showing the reality of how people with same-sex attraction are openly declaring their gender choice today.
We can feel in many places through the scenes that those who are against heterosexuals are with us and religion and politics are after that. Mainly, the climax of the film should be appreciated. In fact, he takes a moment to think about what he thinks of as kaathal. The biggest strength of the film is that the beauty of a man’s sexual feelings is created like a poem by three women, wife, daughter and lawyer.
It is surprising that Mammootty, who chooses different stories and characters, is playing a heterosexual attraction for the first time. Will any of the top stars of Indian cinema play heterosexual attraction in today’s blockbusters?
It can be felt that Mammootty has produced and acted in this story because he has realized the seriousness of these problems in the society. Especially, Mammootty’s acting ability is said even when he cries ‘Goddess’ thinking that he has tortured a woman for 20 years after being forced into marriage!
Jyotika’s performance as the heroine who carries the weight of the mind throughout the film is also connected to the story. Jyothika has done a great job as a wife who stands by her husband, understands his feelings and breaks up with him. He will be remembered by critics with this film!
Storytellers and screenwriters are the ones who are determined for directors who make films based on human emotions like Jio Baby. It seems that the reason why those emotions have taken us to the point of being moved in the film is the story writers of the film, Adarsh Sukumaran and Palsan Skaria. Subtle feelings that are only identified by writers are spoken. Malayalam cinema is said to have transcended Malayalam literature. The film crew thinks that ‘Kaathal The Core’ has confirmed that point.
Jishu Sengupta’s unadulterated performance as Tangan, Shalu K. Thomas’ cinematography and Mathews Pulikan’s background score add strength to the experience of the film.
The director could have avoided some of the unnecessary characters in the film, having focused so much on a plot that could garner both praise and criticism.
Thangan, who is teased because her uncle is attracted to the opposite sex, hugs the hearty boy and says, “People are afraid of separation” and Omana says, ‘I am not separated for the sake of my life. ‘kaathal the core’ seems to be the best film because of the love and romance created by saying to Mathews that it is for your life!
