Javier Milei, a right-wing libertarian and economist, won the presidential run-off in Argentina with a victory of 56% against his opponent Mr. Massa, who received 44% of the vote. His populist approach proved to be successful on Sunday, November 19.
After a political shift in Argentina, some have labelled it a “political earthquake.” Ex-president Trump welcomed Milei’s victory and stated that Milei would “Make Argentina Great Again.”
Likewise, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva congratulated him saying “Democracy is the voice of the people, and it must always be respected. My congratulations to Argentine institutions for conducting the electoral process and to the Argentine people who participated on election day in an orderly and peaceful manner. I wish the new government good luck and success.”
Apart from the mixed reactions to his win, Mr. Milei has promised to bring about significant changes in the country. This includes cutting taxes, reducing government spending, and slashing bureaucracy by closing down ministries of women, education, culture, and health. Also, the state-owned enterprises will be privatized as well.
On social issues, he plans to prohibit the Abortion law, which was legalized in Argentina in 2020. Additionally, he intends to allow the sale and purchase of human organ
After his controversial win, many believe that the new leader will bring positive change, but it also poses new challenges.
