December 2, 2023/ 10:45 AM IST: Cyclone “Michaung” will hit the coast around Monday 6 PM. States like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Odisha and Puducherry will counter moderate to heavy rainfall due to the cyclone. With a maximum windspeed of 80-90 kmph, gusting to 100 kmph, the cyclone is looming in the Bay of Bengal.
About Cyclone “Michaung”:
The name “Michaung” means strength and resilience. This name was suggested by Myanmar. It is the fourth Bay of Bengal and sixth Indian Ocean cyclonic storm of 2023. The cyclone will start looming in the Bay of Bengal on December 2, 2023, then rise on December 3, and make landfall in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu on December 4.
Now, the cyclone is named based on Regional Specialized Metrological Centers (RSMCs) and Tropical Cyclone Warning Centers (TCWCs). Now, the members of RSMCs suggest the names of cyclones. In the early period, tropical cyclones were named based on location, objects, and other things.
IMD issued a Rainfall alert:
The Indian Metrological Department (IMD) issued the alert in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and the southern areas of Odisha amid the cyclone.
- In Tamil Nadu, places like Chennai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Kancheepuram, Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Perambalur, Sivangangai and Pudukkottai were on ‘orange’ alert. The condition of the sea will be rough amid cyclone Michaung. That’s why the Tamil Nadu C.M. Thiru M.K Stalin instructed the officials to take precautions and evacuate people from cyclone-prone areas.
Information by IMD on Cyclone Michaung
- In Andhra Pradesh, the IMD issued a ‘red’ alert across the state. According to the data, isolated to very heavy rainfall will occur in the southern coastal part. Heavy rainfall is to take place in the central region of A.P., and extreme rainfall is to occur over the northern coastal part on December 5, 2023.
- In Puducherry, light to medium rainfall will occur across the state. And on December 2, 2023, an isolated to heavy rainfall will happen.
- Meanwhile in Odisha, the southern will be affected more. In districts like Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Koraput and Rayagada to see heavy rainfall of 7-20cm. Moderate rainfall may occur on December 3, heavy rainfall on December 4, and heavy to hefty rainfall of 115.5 mm- 204.5mm is likely to occur on December 5.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team will be available in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu to tackle and safeguard people if the situation gets extreme.
“The aim will be to ensure no loss of lives and to minimize damage to property and infrastructure. Further, all essential services should be restored in the shortest possible time”, stated the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team.
Advisory issued for “Fisherman”:
Due to the rough condition of the sea, the state government issued an advisory for the fishermen to avoid roaming across the sea coast, as the cyclone might touch its peak at any time.
Schools to stay closed amid cyclone:
Due to the harsh climatic conditions and heavy rainfall pouring over the states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, the state government issued a notice to keep the schools closed until the situation improves.
However, the Indian coast guards, army and navy will be available with the ships and aircraft to keep track of the situation and take action if necessary.
