The rise of AI has led to an increase in deepfake content on social media, with many users creating and sharing AI-generated photos and videos.
The circulation of AI-generated deepfake videos featuring “Puspa” actress Mandanna went viral online, triggering concerns. Which, the actress expressed her concern via an Instagram story about the misuse of photos and videos.
“Today as a woman and as an actor, I am thankful for my family, friends and well-wishers who are my protection and support system. But if this happened to me when I was in school or college, I genuinely can’t imagine how could I ever tackle this. We need to address this as a community and with urgency before more of us are affected by such identity,” Rashmika Mandanna posted on Instagram.
The Ministry of Electronic and Information Technology is planning to hold a meeting. The meeting will involve senior officials from social media and other internet firms, who will discuss the dos and don’ts of dealing with deepfake content.
PM Modi brought up the issue of a video that supposedly showed him performing the traditional Gujarati dance, Garba. However, he warned against the spread of false information through deepfake technology, which can be a serious internet threat.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology issued an advisory earlier this month to all social media and internet firms, requiring them to take strict actions against deepfake content online.
