In the recent cases of deep fake content, the Union Ministry decided to hold discussions with the senior officials of social media and other internet firms about the AI-generated deepfake content.
To assure the privacy and safety of citizens, the Union government is to assign a Rule Seven official who will help the user file FIRs against any social media firms in cases related to deep fake said Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar.
According to MoS Electronics and Information Technology, a Rule Seven officer will be the person who will make it easy for the citizens to file FIRs against any deep fake content and will make sure that the government notices their allegations. The officer will also be responsible for taking out information from digital platforms and giving responses accordingly.
During a meeting on Friday, the ministry dug out the platforms for not having “terms of use” with India’s internet laws and told them to immediately start informing their rules users on what can and cannot be posted on the platform.
“At today’s meeting, I pulled up the internet platform companies for not having their terms of use aligned with the IT rules. They have to make it clear and explicit to their users about what can and cannot be posted on their platforms”, said Mr Chandrasekhar.
The executives of companies including Meta, Google, Koo, Telegram, Apple, HP, Dell, and Sharechat, along with others, met the union minister on the second day, as a set of two-day meetings over the threat of deep fakes. The first meeting took place with the IT minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Thursday.
Moreover, the Union government ensured that an FIR would be registered against the intermediary. If they reveal the details from where the content has originated then the FIR will be filed, the minister said.
The social media firms have been given seven days to align the platform’s terms of use, per the IT rules.
