Do P.M. Modi’s presence in COP-28’s “Climatic Action Summit” will be important for India?
The World Climate Action Summit is a high-level meeting where several countries are going to attend the meeting. And, India is one among them.
During the G20 Presidency, India spoke about the climatic priority in the country. Also, the New Delhi Leaders stated several specific measures on the climate and sustainable development. India is the world’s largest population and a big contaminant of greenhouse gas. It would be an important event for India to look forward to getting financial support to reduce the use of this gas.
Moreover, P.M. Modi stated that the COP-28 will provide an opportunity to examine the progress made under the Paris Agreement, and will pave the path for future course on climatic action.
“It is important that efforts of the developing world be supported with adequate climate financing and technology transfer. They must have access to equitable carbon and development space to achieve sustainable development”, said P.M. Modi.
What is a Loss and Damage fund?
It’s a fund that was first announced in the COP-27 in Egypt. The purpose of this fund is to help developing countries in the vulnerable situation of climatic change. In other words, we can say it’s compensation from the rich countries to the poor or developing nations. The rising sea level, increase in CO2, floods, droughts, cyclones and many other things are the footprints of the rich nation and their increase in industrialization.
Approval of Loss and Damage fund:
On the first day of COP-28, the loss and damage got a green signal. The initial funding of $475 million is set up, in which the rich nations are going to do the funding. The UAE will host $100 million, $17.5 from the U.S., $10 million from Japan and $275 million from European countries.
Above all this, Modi will be attending three high-level meetings. One is COP-28, starting on November 30 to December 12, 2023. The other two events are the green credit initiative and lead IT.
During the stay, P.M Modi will hold seven bilateral meetings, deliver four speeches and be part of two exceptional initiatives.
