The former Union Minister and senior MLA from BJP, Narendra Singh Tomar was uniformly elected as the fifteenth speaker of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has moved a proposal for Mr Tomar’s name as the assembly speaker. The opposition leader Umang Singhar and other MLAs are in favor of Tomar being elected as the speaker. Afterwards, with sufficient votes, Mr Tomar was elected uniformly as the new speaker of the assembly.
Mr Yadav extended his heartfelt congratulations to him via a post on X.
“I congratulate you on being unanimously elected as the Speaker of Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly. Your efforts and humility have been visible at every step,” posted by Mr Yadav on X.
Besides, the former CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan, other opposition leaders and MLAs congratulated Tomar on his potential to become the speaker of the assembly.
About Narendra Singh Tomar and His Political Journey:
Born in 1957, a 66-year-old veteran Indian politician Narendra Singh Tomar, started his political journey at the BJP Youth Forum in Gwalior in 1980. Then, he became a member of the MP’s Legislative Assembly in 1988.
A major transformation came in 2014, when he was appointed as the Union Cabinet Minister of Steel, Mines, Labor and Employment under the Modi government.
From 2016-19, during the cabinet reshuffle, he replaced Birendra Singh as the Minister of Panchayat Raj, Rural Development and Drinking Water and Sanitation, and stayed in that position till 2019.
From 2020-23, Tomar was assigned as the Minister of Food and Processing Industries, as an additional charge of the position with the previous one. In December 2023, Tomar defeated the Bahujan Samaj Party’s Balveer Singh Dandotiya and was elected as the Minister of Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare.
Know How the Speaker Gets Elected for State Legislative Assembly:
There are specific rules and procedures of each state to elect the speaker, which is based on-
Eligibility: A minimum age of 30 years or more, and only the members of the legislative assembly are eligible to be nominated as the speaker. Also, they have a minimum of years of experience as MLA, as per the rule.
Nomination: The candidates elected for the speaker’s position are supposed to be nominated by the members of the assembly. The numbers required for nomination might vary between seats. However, a single candidate might be nominated unanimously.
No Party Politics: The election of the speaker must be on his/her merit, and not by any political consideration or party affiliation.
After considering the above, the votes get counted, and the governor or the chief secretary announces the name of the candidate who gets the maximum no. of votes. Then, the speaker takes the oath and formally assumes the role.
The Reason Behind Tomar’s Unanimous Selection:
Tomar’s contribution to the state of Madhya Pradesh is uncountable. The reason why he was elected to the speaker’s position unanimously is for his experience, image and much more.
Tomar has an experience of 35 years in politics. He served as the Union Minister for eight years under the Modi government. He was respected across party lines for this long and successful political career. In addition, being a senior leader, he was never involved in any scandal or controversial matter. He is known for his calmness and his ability to work with people from different backgrounds.
Besides, his political strategies like harmony building for the smooth functioning of the assembly, and expanding ties with the allies had benefited BJP previously.
Expectations From the New Speaker:
Based on Tomar’s potentiality, experience and past remarks, the general expectation is that he will maintain the decorum of the Legislative Assembly while fairly conducting the proceedings.
Moreover, he might enhance the assembly’s effectiveness, protect the rights and privileges of MLAs, and most importantly connect the assembly with people.
Overall, Tomar’s election as the speaker of the assembly holds the potential to bring positive changes.
