Moreover, we all know how important is COP-28 summit for the world. After 30 years, leaders across the world met to discuss on the climatic emergency. To understand the COP-28 better, let’s first understand the COP.
What is COP and why is it important?
Conference of the Parties (COP). It is a top-level conference where leaders across the globe come together to discuss taking essential measures on climatic change, suppressing the use of greenhouse gases, the Loss and Damage fund (refers to funding to developing countries for drought, flood, and other climatic disaster. Also, to help countries financially over climatic changes, technology, and other things.
COP is vital for taking action against climatic changes. The world leaders come together to discuss and negotiate about what action should be taken for the occurrence of climatic changes. For this, COP offers great attention towards climate change, stating that without industries, the private sector, and civil society the world will not be able to eliminate climate change.
Why COP is so Big?
Over the past 20 years, the COP has become one of the largest annual conferences organized by the U.N. The Head of the State or country, representatives of civil society, inter-governmental organizations (IGOs), Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the media. Additionally, the experts, influencers and climate change leaders attend the COP share their stories, and get solutions at panel discussions, exhibitions, cultural events and other side events. This makes the COP massive.
As we know, this year UAE (United Arab Emirates) is hosting the COP-28 summit. Several countries have been attending the conference. However, a question arises about how these countries get the opportunity to host the COP. Here’s to know the selection process for COP.
How country get selected to “Host” COP?
The Regional members of the United Nations Climate Change (UNCC) hold discussions for which country to host the COP from their region.
Afterwards, the country to host the COP moves among the five United Nations Regional Groups (The Asia-Pacific Group, The African Group, The Latin American and Caribbean Group (GRULA). The Eastern Europe Group and The Western Europe and other Group (WEOG)).
Once the Regional Group gives the green signal, the selected country will send the offer to “host the conference” to the UNCC secretaries. Then, the secretaries will look at the fact and perspective that involves “logical, technical and financial” elements for hosting the conference. Following the factors, the reports were given to the Bureau of COP, before the beginning of the year.
Furthermore, over 20 countries call to triple the world’s nuclear capacity and over 110 countries to triple the use of renewable energy and increase the availability of energy by 2030.
