IND defeats USA at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024
India defeated USA by 7 wickets at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 held at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium yesterday. Led by skipper Aaron Jones, team USA displayed remarkable effort in playing against the world’s reigning cricket champions but ultimately succumbed to a steady partnership between Suryakumar Yadav (SKY) and Shivam Dube.
IND XI squad: 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Virat Kohli, 3 Rishabh Pant (wk), 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Shivam Dube, 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Axar Patel, 9 Jasprit Bumrah, 10 Mohammed Siraj, 11 Arshdeep Singh.
USA XI squad: 1 Steven Taylor, 2 Shayan Jahangir, 3 Andries Gous, 4 Nitish Kumar, 5 Aaron Jones (capt), 6 Corey Anderson, 7 Harmeet Singh, 8 Shadley van Schalkwyk, 9 Jasdeep Singh, 10 Saurabh Netravalkar, 11 Ali Khan.
Among squad USA, Nitish Kumar (27/23), Steven Taylor (24/30), and Corey Anderson (15/12) scored the most, as Indian bowlers Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh kept up the pressure. Facing the world’s reigning cricket champions, USA squad could not make considerable progress and ended the innings at 110/8.
The loss of top wickets like Shayan Jahangir (0/1), Andries Gous (2/5), Corey Anderson (15/12), and skipper Aaron Jones (11/22) forced USA to limit their experiments early in the game, thus setting a low target for India to chase.
All hopes for USA were based on star bowler Saurabh Netravalkar, who had shown remarkable prowess in previous games against Pakistan and Canada. His dismissal of India’s opening batsmen Virat Kohli (0/1) and skipper Rohit Sharma (3/6) in the first two overs of the second innings had raised many concerns. Opener Risabh Pant (18/20) had been steadily building a partnership with Suryakumar Yadav but was dismissed by bowler Ali Khan. Netravalkar also dropped a crucial catch of SKY that enabled India to stay in the game.
Newcomer Shivam Dube (31/35) carried on with SKY (50/49) and ended the game with seven wickets to spare. The victory has secured India’s spot in the Super Eight group. Currently, India is at the top of the table with 6 points.
IND beats USA by 7 Wickets, Match Highlights, MVP, ICC Men’s T20 World Cup
Indian bowler Arshdeep Singh won the MVP of the match award for his remarkable deliveries throughout the first innings that yielded four US wickets (Shayan Jahangir (0/1), Andries Gous (2/5), Nitish Kumar (27/23), and Harmeet Singh (10/10).
Among Squad USA, opener Nitish Kumar’s attempts to form a stable partnership with Corey Anderson fell apart after a full-toss ball delivered by Arshdeep Singh was caught by Mohammad Siraj.
While skipper Aaron Jones and opener Steven Taylor had great going, India’s bowling squad realized the danger of letting them acclimate and snatched their wickets just in time. The uneven bounce of the ground at Nassau County International Stadium further added to USA’s complexities as they failed to set a higher target.
USA bowler Saurabh Netravalkar avenged Shayan Jahangir’s early wicket loss in the first innings when he dismissed Indian skipper Rohit Sharma (3/0) and Virat Kohli (0/1) in quick succession in the starting overs of the game.
But Risabh Pant (18/20) and Suryakumar Yadav (SKY) worked in tandem, raising the run rate for India with every delivery. When Pant was dismissed, Shivam Dube (31/35) quickly replaced him and carried on with SKY (50/49) to clinch victory for India.
USA may have had a favorable experience playing against Pakistan last week, but Team India quietly reminded the giants of why they are the number one squad in the world.
India is currently at the top of Group A’s points table and will be facing Canada on June 15. Whether USA will regain its winning streak is yet to be decided as the team gears up to face Ireland on June 14.
