Dramatic Battle
For years, the two corporations have been at odds over iPhone apps. However, the most recent breakup between the two is one of the most severe, and EU officials have intervened.
Epic has long maintained that, just like it does on the Mac, it ought to be permitted to operate its own App Store on the iPhone. Apple has repeatedly denied that.
But in order to adhere to Europe’s Digital Markets Act, which tries to curtail the dominance of large internet giants, Apple released modifications this week. One of these modifications is the ability for developers to create their own app shops, whereby other programs can be distributed.
Apple claims
Apple claims on dramatic battle with Epic Games Sweden entered into the Apple DPLA on February 16, 2024, through a “click-through” agreement; Apple did not conduct an executive review of this arrangement.
Following Epic’s antitrust lawsuit against Apple, Apple formally removed “Fortnite” and other games from the App Store in August 2020 and suspended the developer account of the gaming firm.
Epic “publicly criticized their proposed DMA compliance plan,” which was one of the reasons Apple terminated its developer account for Sweden, according to paperwork Epic Games submitted. “Apple leadership faces some massive decisions in the coming weeks as the contradictions between their stated principles and the intended and actual consequences of their present policies are reckoned with: the app store monopoly, the digital goods payments monopoly, the tax, the suppression of true information about competing purchasing options, the blocking of competing web browser engines and outright destruction of web apps,” Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said in a post published on X on February 26. This was one of the statements made by Sweeney in the post.
Epic Games claims
As Apple has repeatedly done to other developers, Epic Games claims on dramatic battle “Apple is retaliating against Epic for speaking out against Apple’s unfair and illegal practices.” Given that Apple retains the authority to remove any third-party marketplace from iOS at any point, it is implausible for any sane developer to use a third-party app store, as they risk losing their audience forever.
Apple released a statement saying that it has the right to terminate “any or all of Epic Games’ wholly owned subsidiaries, affiliates, and/or other entities under Epic Games’ control at any time and at Apple’s sole discretion” due to Epic’s egregious breach of its contractual obligations to Apple, according to the courts.
