Who is Swati Maliwal?
Swati Maliwal was chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) and an active member of social issues and women’s rights. She has been associated with several movements and campaigns that aimed to protect gender equality, advocating for strict laws and combating violence against women.
In 2015, she was appointed to the DCW to address the issues related to sexual harassment, acid attacks, and women’s safety in Delhi. Her tenure lasted till 2018, but it again got extended for three years. Apart from this, she was also the core member and youngest person to join the Indian Against Corruption Movement, which was headed by Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal.
During a meeting for the party’s political affairs, Maliwal’s name came across the discussion. The committee finalize AAP’s nominations for the upper house. Moreover, Sushil Kumar Gupta, Rajya Sabha MP whose tenure will end this month will pave the path for Maliwal. And expressed his intent to compete in the Haryana Polls.
Why AAP chose Maliwal?
As Swati Maliwal is an advocate for women’s rights and a popular figure among women, especially in Delhi, could bring valuable political support for the AAP in future elections. Besides, AAP was looking forward to replacing Sushil Kumar and found Maliwal as a suitable candidate.
Moreover, nominating a woman like Maliwal will provide a strategic advantage and could help the party push the agenda on various topics and challenges for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Also, her presence in Rajya Sabha could draw further attention to women-related issues and spark public discussion that will lead to greater social shifts and progress.
