The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has recently given an update on the current situation of eight former officers of the Indian Navy who are facing a death sentence in Qatar on Thursday. The MEA has shared the latest information regarding the case, which has been a matter of concern for the Indian government and the families of the accused.
MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi gave the update on this case that the appeal got accepted by Qatar and India is putting all the legal and consular effort into bringing back the detained individuals. As of now, two hearings have been held, and closely observing the legal proceedings.
After a thorough legal process, the High Court in Qatar accepted the appeal, resulting in a positive outcome for those involved.
Case of Detain ex-navy Officer:
In August of last year, the authorities in Qatar announced that they had sentenced seven former Navy officers and one sailor to death. The Indian government was quick to react, strongly objecting to the decision and immediately lodging an appeal.
Fortunately, in November, the appeal was accepted, bringing hope to the families of those affected. The next hearing is expected soon and will hopefully bring about a fair and just resolution to this difficult situation.
Regarding the case, earlier it was stated that spying on Qatar’s private firm, then it was collecting information related to ‘Israel’. However, the background of the story is yet to be revealed and remains under observation.
Also, the Indian embassy seems to be “Optimistic” as they got consular for the detained individuals. As because of the meeting of PM Modi with Emir Sheik Tamim Bin Hamad at COP-28.
Arindam Bagchi said to the media that any information or detail related to this case can’t be disclosed, because it is “sensitive” in nature.
After the 2 hearings, the family members of seven ex-naval officers are expecting the final decision soon. Also, due to some misinformation disseminated by the West-Asian Media, the families are with lots of misinterpretation.
Which, the MEA spokesperson stated about taking care of the case in both legal and diplomatic ways.
“There have been 2 hearings. We filed an appeal, from the families, and the detainees had a final appeal. 2 hearings have since been held. We are closely following the matter and extending all legal and consular assistance”, said Bagchi.
The Chief Naval Officer, R. Hari Kumar stated that the government is focusing and putting efforts towards the security and safe return of the ex-navy officers.
“The total support and effort are being put in by the government of India” reassuring the welfare of the ex-navy veterans.
Besides, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has expressed hope that the individuals who have been detained will be released on December 18th, which is the National Day of Qatar. However, as of yet, there has been no official statement released regarding the matter.
