Chennai Grandmasters 2023 Chess Tournament India’s young player D. Gukesh won the Champion title.
The Grand Masters Chess Tournament was held in Chennai on behalf of the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority. The Chennai Grandmasters International Chess Tournament in which 8 leading Grandmasters participated has been going on in Chennai for the past week. In the 7th and final round of matches Indian player D. Gukesh, playing with black pieces against fellow countryman Harikrishna, agreed to a draw on the 31st piece move.
Qualified for Candidates tournament:
Grand Masters Chess Tournament was held as a qualifying match for the Candidates Masters tournament to be held in 2024. Already, Pragnananda, Vidit Gujarati and Vaishali from India have qualified for the competition.
The seventh round of the tournament was held on Thursday. The match between Indian GMs Gukesh-Harikrishna ended in a 0.5-0.5 draw. In another match, Iran GM Baham defeated Aleksandr Pradike 1-0.
The match between American GM Eleven Aronian and GM Pavel Iljanov also ended in a draw 0.5-0.5. Arjun Erikaisi beat Russian player Sanan Zhukiro 1-0.
Tie Break:
chennai players D. Gukesh and Arjun Erikhaisi were tied with 4.5 points each. However, based on tie breaks, D. Gukesh won the title of champion. Another Indian player Pendala Harikrishna secured the third position with 4 points.
Tamil Nadu Government Sports Development Department Additional Chief Secretary Adulya Mishra, FIDE Vice President Viswanathan Anand presented the prize.
Gukesh has retained the opportunity to qualify for the 2024 Candidates Competition. And to qualify for this competition, the World Rapid Championship, which is the next challenge, will be held from 25th to 31st in Samkand.
