On Thursday, filmmaker Anushree Mehta who made a smashing debut with her film Mrs Undercover last year is set to direct the remake of the classic 1972 movie Bawarchi, which was originally directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
Bawarchi gets it remake
The beloved 1972 classic film ‘Bawarchi’, starring Rajesh Khanna and Jaya Bachchan is getting a modern remake, the announcement coincides with the 51st anniversary of ‘Bawarchi’ in July 2023. The film was a remake of the 1966 Bengali film ‘Galpo Holeo Satti’ starring Rabi Ghosh, and directed by Tapan Sinha which explores the theme of community spirit, family dynamic and the power of kindness.
However, the adaption of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s film will be the first movie out of the three-film collaboration between Jaadugar Films and Sameer Raj Sippy Productions, who have partnered to bring this remake to life, along with the direction of Anushree Mehta.
Anushree Mehta to direct the remake version
The director Anushree Mehta has described the Bawarchi’s adaption as a ‘Kaleidoscope’ combination of excitement, humbleness and honour, with a massive responsibility. But she ensured that the adaption would reflect her confidence, sensitivity and honesty towards her work.
Moreover, she stated that the project is still in its early stages and the shooting will start in 2024, with details like caste and release date yet to be announced. However, the remake is expected to be adapted for a contemporary audience, possibly with changes to reflect today’s societal context and challenges. Besides this, other films are on the way.

Anushree Mehta is a debutant director this year and a writer. Her films were critically acclaimed and also received audiences as well. She has written a short film ‘Unkahee’ and several episodes of CID, Saavdhan India and many more. And this time, Anushree Mehta along with Abir Sengupta (of Jaadugar Films) and Sameer Raj Sippy (of SRS Productions) will jointly produce and direct the official remakes of Rajesh Khanna’s Bawarchi (1972), Amitabh- Jaya Bachchan’s Mili (1975) and Gulzar’s film Koshish (1972).
