On Saturday, a day before the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra from Manipur, asserting it an “ideological yatra” and not an electoral one, the Congress will take out the “Anyay Yatra” against the Modi-led government. The Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “The yatra is being taken out keeping in mind political, economic, and social injustices committed in the last 10 years”.
Congress’s “Ideological” Yatra
The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will pass through 100 Lok Sabha constituencies across 15 states. These states account for 355 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats. The yatra will be flagged off by the Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge from Manipur’s Thoubal district. The yatra will end on March 20 after a journey of 67 days, however, the route will be covered mostly by bus, and five to seven-kilometre stretches of foot marches.
The party believes that this yatra will be proved as to be “transformative” as Rahul Gandhi’s previous march. The Congress has said that it is taking out the yatra as the govt did not give it a chance to raise people’s issues in the Parliament and to re-establish justice, liberty, fraternity, and equality in the Constitution. The Congress leader Jairam Ramesh stated the Amrit Kaal is Anyay Kaal. He said, “The Prime Minister shows golden dreams of “Amrit Kaal” what is the reality of the last 10 years “Anyay Kaal”.
Modi’s “Amrit Kaal” framed as “Anyay Kaal”
With the BJP focusing on the Ram Temple’s consecration ceremony on January 22, the Congress wants to put the spotlight on bread-and-butter issues through this yatra.
The Congress’s plan to portray Modi’s “Amrit Kaal” as “Anyay Kaal” in their Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra by presenting the rising prices, unemployment, social inequalities, and low wages, contrasting with the optimistic promises of Amrit Kaal. Moreover, they will focus on specific policy failures like demonetization, Goods and Services Tax (GST) implementation, and farmer laws to showcase the sufferings. Likewise, several other issues will be showcased through this yatra.
Is this a Yatra threat or reward for the BJP?
Whether this yatra is a threat or reward for the BJP is still multi-faceted. On one hand, it could enhance the Congress base, by highlighting several issues to counter the BJP. While the BJP might use this yatra to its advantage, framing it as negative, divisiveness, and rallying its base around Hindu nationalism. Moreover, the media narratives, ability to connect with the voters, offering credible solutions, and many other things will play a crucial role.
Trajectory to this yatra
The Congress ‘Nyay Yatra’ was born from the discontent with Modi’s ‘Amrit Kaal’ that aims to expose the hardships through data, and testimonies with a stark picture of unemployment and social woes against the BJP on potential narratives of negativity and divisions.
