The central government’s consumer affairs ministry has come into action and mandates the date of manufacture and unit sale price on packaged goods sold in India.
Regarding this, the Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs, Rohit Kumar Singh said:
The order was issued making it mandatory to mention the date of manufacture and selling price subject to a specific weight or quantity on the imported goods. The order came into force on Monday (Jan 1).
So far, it has been the norm to mention either the date of manufacture or the date of importation of the imported goods.
However, under the new directive, manufacturers will be required to indicate the date of manufacture on all packaged items.
Apart from this, the rule so far has been to specify the maximum retail sale of the impounded goods. But, as the same product is packaged in different sizes and weights, consumers get confused about their exact price.
Mandatory to mention the unit price:
He said that after the new order, the manufacturers will have to indicate on the labels the selling price based on the weight or volume of the items along with the maximum retail price of the items.
Under the new regulation, products packaged under the new norms will be labeled with the maximum retail price per 1 kg (for lightweight products) or per 100 grams, making it easier for consumers to compare prices between similar products of different companies.
